2010 Youth of the Year
Ashley Santos
Ashley Santos is a junior at Bristol Eastern High School and is currently ranked in the top third of her class. Ashley’s is committed to excel in school, and sees that as a key to future academic success and scholarships for college, where she would like to pursue a teaching degree.
Breaking the cycle of poverty is a powerful motivation, and Ashley has been motivated since she was a young child. Growing up in Cambridge Park with a single mom and large family in an apartment is not a traditional household, and Ashley was aware from a young age that there were many economic and social obstacles. As she began to understand her family’s struggles, she looked for solutions, one of which was to get a job. At the age of 14, she began to work as a junior staff at the Club to help make ends meet. This year, she has logged over 100 volunteer hours in addition to her 10 paid hours each week.
Her connection to the Club dates to the day she was eligible to join. As a six year old, she participated in the Choir, learned to play softball, and did her homework at the Club. Today, Ashley gives back by serving as a Power Hour assistant and organizing activities to improve cognitive skills and ensure homework completion. She has also served as the Torch Club President, and implemented several community service projects. Ashley is extremely active in the SMARTMoves program. As a graduate of the Smart Kids and Smart Start program herself, Ashley is in a powerful position to influence the younger children to make good decisions.
Ashley is also committed to doing her part to improve the quality of life in her neighborhood. She helps to translate when needed, wraps presents for Christmas, and acts as a host for the Cambridge Park Give Thanks program and Family Day picnic, as well as serves as a role model for the younger girls who seek out, and benefit from, her attention.
The Boys and Girls Club staff congratulates Ashley on her selection as the 2010 Youth of the Year. Based on her accomplishments to date, we know that she will be an enthusiastic and inspiring ambassador for the Club and all it stands for during the upcoming year.
